Community Land Group

Working towards community-led affordable housing in Comrie — partnering with Perth & Kinross Council and the Communities Housing Trust to address a recognised housing shortage.

Current focus

Housing needs and demand assessment underway, with technical support from Perth & Kinross Council and the Communities Housing Trust.

Comrie, like many rural Scottish communities, faces a significant shortage of affordable housing. Young people cannot afford to stay. Key workers cannot find homes. The Community Land Group exists to change that — using community ownership and partnership to create housing that benefits Comrie rather than the open market.

What the group is doing

In 2022 the group secured a commitment from Perth & Kinross Council and the Communities Housing Trust (CHT) to support Comrie as the next community to receive funded technical assistance for a community-led housing scheme. The first step is a housing needs and demand assessment, followed by a feasibility study for suitable sites.

CHT brings expertise from comparable projects across Highland Perthshire — in Kinloch Rannoch, Aberfeldy, and Dunkeld. Comrie benefits from their track record while shaping its own solution: the community gets to define what type of housing is built, where, and for whom.

The opportunity

Community-led housing can take many forms: affordable rent, self-build plots, cohousing, or renovation of vacant and derelict sites. The group is exploring all options, with PKC funding to support the assessment and planning process. CDT acts as budget holder; the group leads the community engagement.

Get involved

This is long-term work — the project timeline is five to six years — and it needs people with a range of skills and time to give. Whether you have a background in planning, architecture, finance, or community engagement, or simply care about Comrie's future, your involvement matters.
